Squirt Low Temperature Chain Lube | Cold-Weather Bike Lube

  • $24.95

Heading somewhere seriously cold? Standard wax lubricants can harden below freezing, reducing their ability to move through and protect your chain. Squirt Low Temperature Chain Lube is formulated to maintain the right consistency in temperatures from approximately -18°C to 0°C.

Based on Squirt’s popular Long Lasting Chain Lube, this cold-weather version is designed for snow, fat-bike and alpine riding. It keeps the chain running smoothly without the dirty, abrasive build-up associated with conventional oil-based lubricants.

It’s a specialist option for riders heading into genuine sub-zero conditions rather than a general NZ winter lube. Think South Island alpine riding, overseas winter adventures and snow-covered trails.

Why use Squirt Low Temperature Chain Lube?

  • Made for sub-zero riding: Maintains effective lubrication between approximately -18°C and 0°C.
  • Clean-running wax formula: Dries on the chain without attracting the same level of dirt and grit as an oil-based lube.
  • Quieter drivetrain: Helps keep your chain running smoothly in conditions where standard wax can become too hard.
  • Suitable for every bike chain: Can be used on road, gravel, mountain bike and fat-bike chains.
  • Easy to switch: Interchangeable with standard Squirt Chain Lube when your riding conditions change.
  • Considered formula: Readily biodegradable, PFAS-free and solvent-free.
  • Bottle size: 120 ml

How to apply

  1. Before the first application, completely remove any factory grease or previous lubricant.
  2. Rinse the chain and allow it to dry fully.
  3. Shake the bottle thoroughly.
  4. Apply the lube to the inside of the dry chain while turning the cranks.
  5. For the initial treatment, apply a second coat after five minutes.
  6. Allow the chain to dry completely before riding, preferably overnight.

Cold-weather tip: Apply the lube indoors at a warmer temperature. This allows its water carrier to evaporate properly before the bike is taken outside into freezing conditions.

Good to know

Once you’re using Squirt, routine degreasing generally isn’t necessary. Brush away any loose dirt and reapply when the chain begins to sound dry. After a particularly muddy ride, a more thorough clean may be required.

Store the bottle between approximately 4°C and 35°C with the cap securely fitted. While this lube is designed for riding below freezing, the bottle itself should not be allowed to freeze.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature is Squirt Low Temperature Chain Lube designed for?

It is formulated for riding in temperatures between approximately -18°C and 0°C, where standard wax-based chain lubes may become too hard to lubricate effectively.

Can I use it in normal NZ winter conditions?

You can, but it is specifically designed for sub-zero conditions. For everyday NZ winter riding above freezing, standard Squirt Long Lasting Chain Lube will generally be the more suitable option.

Can I switch between standard Squirt and the Low Temperature version?

Yes. The two Squirt formulas are interchangeable, making it easy to change lubricants when heading into or returning from colder riding conditions.

Do I need to degrease my chain before applying it?

Yes, before the first application. Factory grease and any previous oil-based lubricant should be completely removed, and the chain must be clean and dry. Once you are using Squirt, regular degreasing generally isn’t required.

How long should I let it dry before riding?

Allow the lube to dry completely before riding, preferably overnight. Apply it indoors at a warmer temperature so the water carrier can evaporate before taking the bike outside.

Can the bottle be stored in freezing temperatures?

No. Although the lube is made for riding below freezing, the bottle itself should be stored between approximately 4°C and 35°C and must not be allowed to freeze.
