Skratch Sport Hydration vs Super High-Carb: Which One Do You Need?

Posted by Trevor Barrett on

Skratch Labs Sport Hydration and Super High-Carb Drink Mix may both go in your bottle, but they do different jobs.

Sport Hydration is primarily designed to replace fluid and electrolytes lost through sweat, with a smaller amount of carbohydrate energy. Super High-Carb is primarily a fuel, delivering considerably more carbohydrate and calories when eating enough solid food becomes difficult.

The right choice depends on the length and intensity of your ride, the conditions and whether hydration or fuel is your main priority.

What is Skratch Sport Hydration Drink Mix?

Skratch Labs Sport Hydration Drink Mix is designed to help replace the electrolytes you lose through sweat while providing a small amount of carbohydrate energy.

Each serving contains approximately 400mg of sodium, along with potassium, calcium and magnesium. It also provides around 19–20g of carbohydrate and 80 calories.

The flavour is light rather than thick or overly sweet, so it’s made to be something you can keep drinking while you ride.

When should you use Sport Hydration?

Choose Sport Hydration when replacing fluid and electrolytes is the main job. It’s particularly useful for:

  • Warm or humid riding conditions
  • Indoor trainer sessions where you sweat heavily
  • Shorter or steady rides where you don’t need a large amount of liquid fuel
  • Long rides where you’re getting most of your energy from bars, chews, gels or real food
  • Riders who want a light-tasting alternative to plain water

For an easier ride of around an hour, water may be enough, particularly in cooler conditions. If it’s hot, you’re working hard or you tend to sweat heavily, Sport Hydration may be the more useful bottle choice.

What is Skratch Super High-Carb Drink Mix?

Skratch Labs Super High-Carb Drink Mix is designed to put a substantial amount of fuel into your bottle.

A standard two-scoop serving provides approximately 50g of carbohydrate, 200 calories and 200mg of sodium. You can increase this to four scoops for approximately 100g of carbohydrate and 400 calories.

Most of its carbohydrate comes from Cluster Dextrin™, a complex carbohydrate designed to deliver plenty of energy while remaining light and drinkable. It’s useful when eating enough bars, gels or solid food becomes difficult.

When should you use Super High-Carb?

Choose Super High-Carb when getting enough energy is the main challenge. It’s particularly useful for:

  • Long-distance road, gravel and mountain-bike rides
  • Endurance racing and events
  • Hard or extended training sessions
  • Riders who struggle to chew or tolerate enough solid food while riding
  • Building a measured carbohydrate intake into a race or training plan

It can also be useful in cooler conditions. You may still have a high energy requirement even when you aren’t sweating enough to drink several bottles an hour.

Why Super High-Carb doesn’t automatically replace Sport Hydration

This is where the product names can cause confusion.

Super High-Carb does contain sodium, but its main job is supplying calories and carbohydrate. Sport Hydration contains less carbohydrate but more sodium per standard serving because hydration and electrolyte replacement are its priority.

Your fuel and hydration needs don’t always rise at the same rate.

On a cool, long ride, you might need plenty of carbohydrate without needing a huge amount of fluid. On a hot ride, you may need more water and electrolytes than your high-carbohydrate bottle alone provides.

Can you use Sport Hydration and Super High-Carb together?

Yes. Many riders will use both products as part of the same ride plan.

For example, you could carry:

  • One bottle of Super High-Carb for concentrated fuel
  • One bottle of Sport Hydration for additional fluid and electrolytes
  • Extra water, food or Energy Chews depending on the ride

You can also use Sport Hydration alongside bars, chews or other solid food if you prefer to keep most of your calories out of your bottle.

The important part is considering carbohydrate, sodium and fluid separately rather than assuming one bottle automatically covers everything.

Which Skratch drink mix should you choose?

Choose Sport Hydration if:

  • You mainly need to replace fluid and electrolytes
  • The weather is hot or humid
  • You sweat heavily during indoor or outdoor rides
  • You prefer to get most of your calories from food, chews or gels

Choose Super High-Carb if:

  • You’re planning a long or demanding ride
  • You need considerably more carbohydrate and calories
  • You struggle to eat enough solid food on the bike
  • You want to measure a large amount of your ride fuel through your bottles

Consider using both if:

  • Your ride will be both long and hot
  • You have high carbohydrate needs and a high sweat rate
  • You want separate bottles for fuel and hydration

In short...

Skratch Sport Hydration helps replace what you sweat out. Skratch Super High-Carb helps replace the energy you’re burning.

For many longer rides, the answer isn’t necessarily choosing one and ignoring the other. It’s working out how much fluid, sodium and carbohydrate you need, then using the right combination to cover them.

Whatever you choose, test your hydration and fuelling plan during training before relying on it for a race or major event. Race day is not the time to find out that four scoops in one bottle was a bit ambitious.

Frequently asked questions

Is Skratch Sport Hydration an energy drink?

It provides around 19–20g of carbohydrate and 80 calories per serving, but hydration and electrolyte replacement are its main purposes.

Does Skratch Super High-Carb contain electrolytes?

Yes. A standard two-scoop serving contains approximately 200mg of sodium. However, you may need additional fluid and electrolytes depending on the conditions and your sweat rate.

Which one is better for a short ride?

For a shorter ride, water or Sport Hydration will usually be the more practical choice. Super High-Carb is intended for rides and events where a substantial amount of additional energy is needed.

Which one is better for long-distance cycling?

Super High-Carb makes it easier to carry a large amount of carbohydrate in your bottles. You may still want Sport Hydration or additional water to meet your fluid and electrolyte needs.

Can I use them on an indoor trainer?

Yes. Sport Hydration is particularly useful for sweaty indoor sessions. Super High-Carb may be useful for longer or harder sessions where additional carbohydrate is needed.
