TUFO Thundero Gravel Tyre: a good all-rounder for mixed riding
Posted by Trevor Barrett on
Choosing a gravel tyre gets complicated quickly.
Some feel quick on sealed roads but sketchy once the gravel loosens up. Others grip well off-road but feel draggy the rest of the time. The TUFO Thundero sits in a useful middle ground. It is a tubeless-ready gravel tyre built for riders who want one tyre that can handle a bit of everything without needing to overthink every route.
TUFO describes the Thundero as a universal tyre, and that tracks with the tread design. The centre tread is made up of tightly packed cubes to help it roll quickly and quietly, while the outer tread knobs are there to bite into loose surfaces and help with grip when cornering.
That makes the Thundero a strong option for mixed riding. Sealed roads, gravel roads, hardpack, rail trail, rougher backroads, and everyday gravel missions where the surface changes constantly. It is the sort of tyre that suits riders who want versatility rather than a tyre built only for one extreme. That mixed-surface positioning is an inference from TUFO’s tread description and “can do it all” language on the page.
Another plus is that it is not just about speed. The Thundero also has a puncture-proof ply under the tread, a flexible Jubena sidewall protection layer, and a high-TPI casing with a soft compound designed to smooth out rough surfaces and stop the tyre bouncing around on uneven ground. TUFO also says it is made to be long lasting and deliver high mileage.
So the real appeal here is balance. The Thundero looks like a good fit for riders who want a tyre that feels reasonably quick on the road ride out, but still gives enough grip and confidence once the gravel starts. It is not the tyre I would point to first for deep mud or consistently soft terrain, but for mixed riding it looks like a very solid all-rounder. That final comparison is my read on the tread and use case, not a direct quote from TUFO.
At Trev’s Cycle Shop, the TUFO Thundero is listed in 700x36C and 700x40C, and it is both tubeless ready and hookless compatible.
