How to Keep Your Feet Warm on Cold Rides

Posted by Trevor Barrett on

As the crisp (aka, friggin cold!) and often wet mornings of winter say hi, many of us cyclists contemplate retreating to the indoor trainer. But for the truly dedicated roadies (aka a little bit mad!), there's nothing quite like the invigorating challenge of battling the elements and conquering the open road.

But no one likes low temperatures, wind, rain and road spray, leaving you with wet and cold feet while cycling in winter.

Of course the goal to winter cycling lies in staying warm and comfortable, and when it comes to your feet, no one likes wet & soggy ones. That's where the Tineli Core Winter Booties come in – your essential weapon against the cold-weather blues.

Trev’s take:

If you’re doing early morning road rides and your summer shoes let in too much rain, these are the easiest upgrade. They’re a much cheaper fix than buying dedicated winter shoes, and for most winter riding they’ll do the job well. If you’re riding in proper all-day heavy rain, your feet may still eventually get wet, but they’ll stay warmer for longer than bare shoes.

FAQs: Winter Cycling Shoe Covers for Cold and Wet Rides

If you are wondering whether winter cycling shoe covers are worth it, these are some of the most common questions riders ask before buying.

Do winter cycling shoe covers keep your feet dry in the rain?

Winter cycling shoe covers help keep your feet drier by blocking wind, road spray and light rain. They can make a noticeable difference on cold winter rides, especially when roads are wet and your summer shoes let in too much air. Most cycling shoe covers are best thought of as water resistant rather than completely waterproof in heavy or prolonged rain, so they help keep your feet warmer and drier for longer rather than guaranteeing dry feet in every condition.

Are winter cycling booties worth buying for NZ winter riding?

For many riders, yes. Winter cycling booties are one of the easiest ways to make cold weather riding more comfortable without investing in dedicated winter cycling shoes. If you ride through early morning chill, wet roads, wind and winter drizzle, a good pair of booties can help keep your feet warmer and make winter riding far more manageable. For many New Zealand riders, they are a practical upgrade for road cycling, gravel riding and commuting.

What is the difference between cycling shoe covers, oversocks and winter cycling shoes?

Cycling shoe covers, also called cycling booties, fit over your normal cycling shoes to add extra protection from wind, rain and cold air. Oversocks are usually lighter and better suited to cool conditions rather than proper winter riding. Winter cycling shoes are built specifically for cold weather and usually offer more insulation and weather protection, but they are also more expensive and less flexible than using shoe covers over the shoes you already own.

Can you use winter cycling shoe covers for gravel riding and commuting?

Yes, many winter cycling shoe covers work well for gravel riding and commuting as well as road cycling. They are a good option if you want extra warmth and protection on cold, wet rides without buying a separate pair of winter shoes. For gravel riders, it is worth looking for booties with reinforced heel and toe areas, as rougher terrain, walking sections and muddy conditions can wear them out faster than standard road use.

How should winter cycling shoe covers fit over road cycling shoes?

Winter cycling shoe covers should fit snugly over your cycling shoes without feeling overly tight or difficult to get on. A close fit helps reduce flapping, improves comfort and gives better protection against wind and spray. If shoe covers are too loose, they can move around or bunch up while riding. If they are too tight, they can put extra stress on the zip, seams, toe area or cleat opening and may wear out more quickly.
